WHAT IS IT?
Restorative work includes treatments for gum disease and cavities, as well as for cracked, chipped, broken or missing teeth. The most common treatments are fillings, veneers, crowns and bridges.
There are four main materials used for restorative work: porcelain, dental amalgam, composite resin – which includes ceramic or plastic compounds – and gold.
FILLINGS
The dentist will drill out any decay from your tooth, which leaves your tooth unprotected. To remedy this, a filling will be placed in the tooth that will prevent additional bacteria from entering and causing more damage.
VENEERS
A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material that is placed on the front surface of your teeth with either cement or a bonding adhesive. They help improve the strength of teeth that are chipped, cracked or broken.
CROWNS & BRIDGES
A crown is a cap that is placed over the entire visible surface of a tooth. This is done to protect and strengthen a tooth that has extensive damage, has had a root canal treatment or has another type of issue that threatens the rest of the tooth.
A bridge is a prosthetic tooth placed where a missing tooth has left a gap. It is attached to crowns placed on neighbouring teeth.
